TradeWars 2.3!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sysops, thanks for choosing to run TradeWars on your system! While
I've tried to make game installation as easy and painless as possible, it
DOES require some minimal work from you. Whether you're upgrading from a
previous version or are new to the TradeWars universe, please CAREFULLY read
the following text concerning the CORRECT installation procedures for this
pfile. Approximately 80% of the bug reports I get are actually problems
caused by Sysops skipping a step in the installation of TradeWars!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
--------------
TradeWars has been compiled with RexxPlus. You *MUST* have the RP
environment running on your system before TW will load. If you need the
"RPStart" & "Rexxplslib.library" files, contact my board.
UPDATING FROM VERSIONS 2.04c THROUGH 2.06
-----------------------------------------
WARNING! The update files contained within this archive are for
Sysops updating from version 2.1 or 2.2 *ONLY*! If you are currently running
an older version of TradeWars, you have two options: 1). Download the archive
"TrdWrs2.1.lha" and update to TW 2.1, then to 2.3, or 2). Delete everything
and start over with 2.3.
UPDATING FROM VERSION 2.1
-------------------------
1. Execute the "update.execute" script.
2. Add "tw.uniconvert2.2" to your pfiles listing as a Sysop-only
ARexx file, then run it once and ONLY ONCE! The time this takes will depend
on the amount of Ports your players have created in the universe. When it's
finished, delete the file. You won't need it again!
3. From your pfiles listing, use CNet's "AT" command to edit the
selection for TradeWars. Change the part that says "Path: pfiles:" to read
"Path: pfiles:tradewars/".
UPDATING FROM VERSION 2.2
-------------------------
1. Execute the "update.execute" script.
That's it! Read the "tw.changes.README!" file for a detailed list
of changes in this version!
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FIRST-TIME TRADEWARS SETUP
-------------------------------------------
If you're not currently running any version of TradeWars on your
system, you will need to execute the "tradewars.execute" script. This will
create all necessary directories, copy all needed files and automatically
un-LHA all of the various archives required for the game. Note that the
".lha" archives will be left in their appropriate directories even after they
have been un-compressed so that if you ever get a corrupted data file or want
to reset TradeWars, you will have the archives handy.
Secondly, you will need to add a line to your BBSEvent0 file (NOTE: if
you run amaint and other maintenance files from some other port other than
Port 0, it is okay to add this line to that ports BBSEvent file instead of
BBSEvent0)
You can either add the event from within CNet's CONFIG program with
these settings:
Port : 0
Start Day : all
Start Time: 0
End Day : all
End Time : 0
Command : 1 RUNREXX
Args : pfiles:tradewars/TwNightlyMaint
Process : Clear Line
or simply edit your "BBSEvent0" file and add the line:
all 0 all 0 -o 1 pfiles:tradewars/TwNightlyMaint
Next, go into CNet's editor with the WF command (doesn't matter what
file name you enter), and type:
[CTRL-Q]#0pfiles:tradewars/twnightlymaint}
and then MCI Read the message (with the .M command). This will run the
Maintenance file once to initialize the game. After it has finished running,
abort your message, go into your pfiles area, and add TradeWars! to your
pfiles listing as an ARexx file.
That's it! I hope your users enjoy the game as much as mine do...
LEGAL STUFF
-----------
TradeWars 2.3 is being issued as a PUBLIC release. As long as you are
a registered CNet Amiga Sysop, you are authorized to run this program on your
BBS and pass it along freely (in its ORIGINAL archive) to other registered
CNet Amiga Sysops. This does NOT mean that the game is being released into
the public domain. Outlaw Technology and Chris Cowan retain all rights to
the TradeWars Amiga v2.3 code. While you are free to modify the code for
your own system, you are NOT permitted to give or sell your modified TradeWars
code to anyone else, or remove the "Written by..." or Copyright notices from
being displayed by the game.
REGISTRATION
------------
I really hate it when I download some pfile and the author DEMANDS
that I send in the registration fee or THREATENS me if I don't, so you won't
be reading any of that crap from me. I write programs for CNet Amiga for one
main reason--I happen to ENJOY doing it. I'm asking for a $10 Registration
Fee simply because I put a lot of time and a lot of work into this game and
because I have bills to pay just like everybody else. If your users like
the program and it gets a lot of use on your board, please think about
registering it.
What you get if you send in the registration fee:
o The main advantage to being registered for my games (whether it be
TradeWars or Global-War) is that you get the latest updates to the code
approximately 3-4 months before they are released to the general public. I
don't know how it is in your area, but around here there's always some
friendly competition between the local CNet Amiga boards to see who gets the
newest versions of the onlines first.
o Registered TW2 sysops get priority on the list of suggestions for
new functions and/or changes to the code. While everyone's opinion is valued,
I am going to work to satisfy the registered sysops first.
o Even though the TradeWars 2.3 code is a TREMENDOUS improvement over
the original 1.05d version, I have many, many exciting new ideas for the game.
Wouldn't you hate it if you missed them?
If you do decide to register, please send your $10 check or money
order (or hell, cash if you want!) to:
Chris Cowan
3109 Lenover Dr.
Louisville, KY 40216-1912
Please specify somewhere that you are registering "TradeWars", and
include your board name and number(s) and your handle on Future World.
NOTE: Please be aware that you will receive nothing in the mail!
All updates of the game will be available for you to download from my BBS:
THE DANGER ZONE
(502)448-1155
19.2k v.32
My board is presently only operating on one phone line and has a usage
rate of over 70%, so be patient when trying to get through... It *IS* up and
not off the hook!!
